There is something quietly revealing in the two sons of today’s Gospel. The father asks both to go and work in the vineyard. One says, “I will not,” but later goes. The other says, “Yes, sir,” but does not go.

One says “yes,” but his words do not match his actions. The other says “no,” but his “no” does not have the final word.

Perhaps this is what makes the first son strangely hopeful. His first answer was not his final truth. Something reached him after he had spoken. The truth was able to disturb his first response and lead him somewhere else.

The second son is more difficult. His “yes” sounds right, but it does not become the truth of his life. His words say one thing, while something else within him is guiding his choice. There can be a distance between the truth we speak and the truth by which we actually live.

Perhaps we can live with such a distance without even noticing it. We know how to say what is expected, how to give the acceptable answer, how to appear faithful or obedient. But beneath the words, there may be something else: what we really want, what we fear, what we protect, what we have already decided.

And perhaps this is where truth becomes uncomfortable. Truth does not merely tell us what is right. It reveals what is real. It brings into the light what our words may leave hidden. Jesus says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Perhaps freedom begins when we no longer need to hide from what is true within us.

The Gospel does not seem to ask us to decide which son we resemble. It simply places the two lifestyles before us.
